Depression is a mental health illness that affects a large portion of the population. It can affect people differently based on how bad it is.

Depression is a common mental health issue that causes an individual to feel negative about themselves and life. I do not know how else to put it other than it is severe and causes a person to feel continually sad or unmotivated. It is treatable, but many do not seek treatment as they feel unmotivated or think they do not deserve the help. Some do not recognise the depression warning signs accurately.

It can also affect your behaviour and how you act; it causes you to be more reckless or to self-hurt. If it is not treated, it can lead to some very serious ways of self-treating; such as drinking, gambling, or hurting themselves. If it gets to that level, it needs to be treated by a professional.


Some people feel different symptoms, so it is hard to list all of the possible symptoms. There are an amount of symptoms that are more common, though. Just a few of the common and more noticeable symptoms are:

Negative feelings (feeling hopeless and bleak, no way to improve the situation)
Lack of motivation, even for things you used to love doing
Lack of, or change in, appetite and weight
Insomnia or trouble sleeping
Easily irritated and angered
Constantly feeling physically drained

I am not an expert on depression, and I won’t try to pretend that I am. I have, however, faced my depression and known people that have it. Depression can be very hard to live with if it is not treated or looked after. My main tip for trying to manage depression is by seeing a therapist.

I know that some people are not keen on getting help by professionals, but it is very important. If it absolutely isn’t an option, then I hope I can at least provide some valuable advice. There are ways to help with various symptoms as well as the thoughts and behaviours that go with it.

Continue to talk to supportive people in your life! It can be tough, but it is very important that you don’t push everyone away.

Continue your hobbies and do things you love even if you have no motivation. Force yourself to do something you liked to do before; read, draw, play music, etc.
Go for walks, even if it’s just around your house, daily. Sitting for hours on end is bad for your body.

Sunlight! Try to go outside for even just a few minutes every day. Studies show that sunlight can help boost mood. (Omega-3 fats can also improve mood).
Learn more! Continue to read about the subject! Read various articles, studies, and even some self-help books. Going to see a professional can also give you important information on the subject as well as ways to help.

Spread The Word!

Mental health has a giant stigma surrounding it; saying that having a mental health issue means you are broken, or something is wrong with you. Mental health, specifical depression, is incredibly common and is nothing to be ashamed of. It does not mean you are broken!

One way to help fight the stigma is to spread the word about it! Share your story and share the facts. Help talk to people about depression in a way that helps them learn more about it. Educating yourself on it can also help; it’s important to know about the issues.
